You Can Heal Your Broken Heart

Grief Recovery Method Specialist

My Grief Recovery Story

My mom died unexpectedly in 2002.  Her death was the most traumatic experience of my life.  While I’ve suffered many losses throughout my lifetime, no other life event has been as difficult as losing her.  I would often find myself feeling like I was on an emotional  roller coaster where in the blink of an eye, some thought or memory would pop up that would deepen my sorrow.  I would spend the next hour or so desperately trying to find some relief from the heaviness in my heart.  It was so exhausting.  At times, it felt like I would never be free from the pain.

At my mother’s funeral, the pastor asked everyone to call and check in on me; only one person did.  Most people didn’t know what to say, so they said nothing at all and that was a very lonely feeling.

I felt like I was two different people at times because of how I presented myself in public vs. what I was actually feeling.  I was devastated on the inside but trying to “keep it together” when out in public.  Did I mention how exhausting that is?!  So I read a few books on grief and moved on with my life as best as I knew how.

A few years later, I found myself researching grief recovery programs for my church and discovered the Grief Recovery Institute.  I signed up for a training thinking I was going to learn how to help other people.  I quickly found out there was more healing that I needed first. What I learned about the unresolved grief that we carry inside us, and the need to process it to completion, changed my life.  After the training was complete, I exclaimed to the first person who asked me how it went, "it was one of the best things I have ever done with my life!”  That remains true to this day.  I have remained, and will continue to be, the biggest cheerleader for the Grief Recovery Method.

Almost a decade ago, I began teaching the classes at my church helping others heal from their losses. Then the Institute asked me to become one of their trainers. I am one of less than ten people in the country commissioned to certify people who wish to teach this work. And it is my absolute honor to be able to do it.

Learn How To Let Go of the Pain & Recover a Sense of Happiness

A Live & In-Person Weekend Workshop

Due to COVID19 all In-Person Workshops Are Canceled Until Further Notice. Please see below for online registration.

If you’ve ever experienced a devastating loss, you know what it feels like to have a broken heart.  You may have gone through a divorce, lost a job, or endured a decline in your health.  Or maybe your story is one of the more than 40 other losses a person can experience in a lifetime.  When you have unresolved grief, your body becomes a toxic storage tank for your emotions.  And how you handle all that emotional energy building inside you determines whether you will recover or get stuck in your pain.

A very common response to completing the work of the Grief Recovery Method is that it is life changing.  I know this to be true because I am one of those people whose life improved drastically.   When your heart is broken, your life seems stuck.  When you get emotionally complete, your ability to experience happiness begins to grow again.  You just need to be willing to take the next step on your journey of healing.

Grief recovery with Jocelyn was suggested to be after I went through a painful divorce. I didn't realize that it would also help me work through the history of losses I had experienced up until that point as well as losses I would experience after the course was over. Jocelyn is a gifted instructor who teaches from a place of skill and vulnerability.  She did a great job of facilitating a safe environment where we all felt at ease. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is navigating loss of any kind!

An Online Workshop To Help You Heal Your Broken Heart And Recover From Life’s Disappointments

When you're feeling low and someone asks, "How are you?", what's your most common response:

Good

Fine

The Truth

Do you tell them you're "good" or "fine" even if you're not?

The energy it takes to get through the day when you’re trying to “keep it together” can be physically and mentally exhausting.  Not only that, you may find yourself either constantly remembering painful memories or worrying about what’s going to happen in the future.

Even if it feels like this is the new normal for your life, I am here to tell you it doesn’t have to be!  Whether you are a man or a woman dealing with loss of a spouse, a job, a friendship or any of the more than 40 losses you can experience in your lifetime, there is a way to not only heal your broken heart but also recover a sense of well-being in your everyday life.

Here are just a couple of the benefits that come from completing the steps of the Grief Recovery Method:

Renewed happiness
freedom from the pain

In the past, you may have tried to do the following to deal with (or ignore) your pain:

Keeping Busy:  Occupying your time with work and activities will not make your grief disappear.  As soon as you get un-busy, your grief will be right there waiting for you.

Eating (or Drinking) Your Feelings:  While comfort food is delicious, it unfortunately cannot heal your broken heart.  Drugs and alcohol will only numb the pain temporarily.

Other Support Groups:  You may have gone to support groups to talk about your pain but were not provided with action steps to help you recover.

Introducing the Grief Recovery Method Live Weekend Workshop

Grief Recovery Method Online is a one-hour small online class. The class is limited to just one person (you) and lasts 7 weeks.

I will show you each step of the Grief Recovery Method using one of my own grieving experiences as a demonstration.  Then you will work on the personal loss that is most restricting your sense of happiness.   The crux of your work will focus on recovery from whatever has disappointed you or broken your heart.

In the Grief Recovery Method Online Class, it is my aim to help you recover a sense of happiness and satisfaction in your life.

During the online class, a few of the areas we will address are:

  • The ways we are taught to deal with our losses that keep us stuck in our pain
  • Why your coping mechanisms will never bring you to a place of healing
  • Identifying all of your unresolved grief as it cumulatively affects your capacity for happiness
  • In-depth exploration of the 3 steps you can take to help heal your broken heart
  • What to do when you have a loss in the future
  • You will be receiving a copy of the  Grief Recovery Handbook for your future reference.

The Grief Recovery Guide for Loss ebook

This is a condensed version of the Grief Recovery Handbook.  It is one of the most insightful resources I have ever read on the topic of grief recovery.

How to Make It Through the Day

I wrote this blog because while grievers are working through the steps of the Grief Recovery Method, their grief may make it hard to focus so I wanted to provide some suggestions on "How to Make It Through."  This will be sent as a pdf and is an exclusive blog for Grief Recovery participants.

I have known Jocelyn for nearly eight years and I cannot say enough about her character, kindness, and professionalism. Jocelyn is someone who cares deeply about others, is excellent at what she does and has a compassionate heart that creates safety for anyone who comes in contact with her. I met Jocelyn while we were both becoming certified as Grief Recovery Specialists. I was instantly drawn to her and we have remained friends and colleagues ever since. Due to her work ethic and abilities, Jocelyn went on to become a trainer for other Certified Grief Recovery Specialists. I refer clients to her because I fully trust her ability to work with anyone in need.

It’s been five years since the death of my stepfather and though I pride myself on being a pretty resilient person, it seemed like it was one of those losses that no amount of sheer will and positivity would help me overcome.  It was through my experience with Jocelyn and the Grief Recovery program that helped me to be at peace with what I wished could have been different, better, or more about my dad’s death and help me move on.  I am a healed man.  I have stronger faith.  I recommend to anyone who is dealing with the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job or many other countless losses that we experience at every point in our lives that we don’t take the time to deal with.  Thank you Jocelyn and thank you Grief Recovery.

FAQs

Q:  Will there be a test? (Yes, many people have this concern.)

A:  No. You will be doing personal work, however.  But you will not be “tested” on any of the topics presented.  If you happen to be a perfectionistic, let me know and I will give you an “A” 🙂

Q:  What if I prefer classes that meet in person?

A: I feel ya!  I prefer to be in-person as well.  But if you need help now, I strongly suggest contacting me so I can walk you through the Grief Recovery Method online. I don't plan on resuming online meetings until 2021. If you are adamant about only meeting in-person, let me know and I will notify you when I resume in-person workshops.

Q:  How many participants will there be?

A:  Every workshop varies in size.  On average, group size tends to be between 2-8 people.

Q:  What about confidentiality?

A:  It's just you and me. 🙂 All online classes are a one-on-one format.
